Beginner Pottery Wheel Course

Explore earthenware clay and learn the fundamentals of wheel thrown pottery in this 3-week course for beginners. No experience needed! The focus is to learn and practice the steps of the pottery making process of working with clay on the potter’s wheel. Beginners and returning students who have taken our Intro to the Pottery Wheel Course may attend and practice skills in each stage of the process from start to finish.

Ages 8+ Welcome. (We do not recommend children younger than this age to attend.)

What you’ll learn:

1st Class:

  • How to work with earthenware clay and practice wedging
  • How to center your clay on the wheel
  • Get 3 attempts to throw a small pot, cup, bowl, or dish

2nd Class:

  • Learn techniques to trim, smooth, and carve greenware with various tools
  • Understand the firing process and difference between Bisque, Earthenware, and Stoneware

3rd Class:

  • Explore glazes to add designs and color to your pieces
  • Learn tools of the trade, how to properly clean equipment, and reclaim clay practices

Supplies: Materials included. Additional clay available for purchase if needed.

Please Note: You may repeat the course as many times as you wish to practice your skills. Once you’re ready to move on to the next level, we have an Intermediate Pottery Wheel Course available which will include more in depth instruction and opportunity for building your skills. Pieces made during class must be finished during class time and picked up after final firing. We do not hold pieces past 30 days.

Each 2-hour class meets once a week for three consecutive weeks on Saturday 10am-12pm.
